Mondraker handlebar recall names a Tustin bike shop among sellers

The recall follows five reports of handlebars breaking

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled about 177 Mondraker mountain bikes and ONOFF S9 carbon mountain-bike handlebars on September 3. The agency says an affected handlebar can crack or fracture during use, causing a rider to lose control and fall. Mondraker reported five breaks, including two falls that caused minor abrasions, according to CPSC. The immediate instruction is not to take a cautious test ride: stop using a potentially affected bicycle until its serial number has been checked.

There is a verified Orange County connection, but no local sales count

CPSC names The Path Bike Shop among the sellers, along with Evolucion Innovations and bicycle stores nationwide. Mondraker’s current dealer locator identifies The Path at 215 W. First Street in Tustin. That establishes a real Orange County retail connection; it does not establish that every bike sold there is recalled or that any of the reported failures occurred locally. The federal notice does not publish a California or Orange County unit count. Riders who bought elsewhere still need to check because the bikes were sold nationwide from December 2024 through June 2026.

Check the model year before looking for the serial number

The CPSC list covers the 2025 Neat RR SL, Dune Carbon XR, Foxy Carbon RR, Crafty Carbon RR SL and Crafty Carbon XR; the 2026 Crafty Carbon XR, Crafty Carbon RR S, Crafty Carbon RR SL, Crafty Unlimited GULF, Crafty Carbon Unlimited, Foxy Carbon RR, Level XR and Raze Carbon RR; and the 2027 Zendit RR S, Zendit RR and Zendit XR. CPSC also lists the S9 Carbon MTB Handlebar itself. Product names are not enough to decide that a specific bicycle is affected, and a bicycle that merely looks similar is not proof. Use the manufacturer’s serial-number checker.

The serial number is on the frame—not on a social-media photo

Mondraker’s recall page shows the bike serial number on the down tube or beneath the bottom-bracket area. Enter that number in the company’s official checker. If the result identifies the bicycle as affected, keep it out of service and contact the authorized Mondraker dealer where it was purchased to arrange a free replacement with a reinforced handlebar. The manufacturer says the defect involves insufficient wall thickness in a specific production batch. A visual check, squeeze test or short spin around the block cannot confirm structural strength.

Do not try to ride through the wait for a replacement

Carbon damage can be difficult to judge without the right inspection process, and the reported failure mode concerns a steering component. Do not tape, clamp, sand or otherwise modify the handlebar in an attempt to make it usable. Save the serial-check result, purchase record and any communications with the dealer. If the remedy stalls, CPSC accepts product-safety reports through SaferProducts.gov.

Secondhand owners and sellers should run the same check

A private-sale receipt may not show every component fitted to a used bike, and an owner may not have received the original buyer notice. Stop using a listed model while you verify the serial number with the official tool. CPSC says federal law bars the sale of products subject to a Commission-ordered recall or a voluntary recall conducted with the agency. Do not advertise, trade or give away an affected bike as a workaround; complete the replacement first and retain the dealer record for the next owner.

After a fall, symptoms matter more than the word “minor”

The two injuries reported to the company were described as minor abrasions, but that does not predict the outcome of another crash. Call 911 for a life-threatening injury or an unsafe crash scene. After a blow or jolt to the head, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says emergency danger signs include a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, slurred speech, weakness or numbness, increasing confusion, unequal pupils, loss of consciousness or inability to wake. A helmet reduces risk but cannot make a broken steering component safe, and massage or exercise recovery should not delay medical assessment after a serious fall.

What is confirmed—and what riders still need to verify

The confirmed facts are narrow: the recall date is September 3; about 177 U.S. units are covered; five breaks and two minor-injury falls were reported; the affected bikes sold for about $5,000 to $12,000; and the remedy is a free handlebar replacement after a positive serial-number check. CPSC does not publish the affected serial range, dealer-by-dealer inventory, a local incident location or a deadline for completing repairs. Check the live recall pages rather than relying on a screenshot, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer for a bike-specific result.
