Why Is Massage So Sensitive? What Men Should Know
The real reasons massage feels "sensitive," and how to protect yourself and find legitimate men's care.

Why Is Massage So Sensitive? (And Why It's Harder for Men)
Say "I got a massage" in a group chat and watch what happens. A joke. A raised eyebrow. A "…just a massage?" A therapeutic service that helps with back pain and stress somehow became the one that makes people whisper. Why?
Because some businesses use massage as a front
This is the biggest reason. Polaris, the anti-trafficking nonprofit, found more than 9,000 illicit massage businesses operating in the U.S. Those businesses exist in every state and bring in roughly $2.5 billion a year. That's a serious problem for people who are exploited, and it casts a shadow over honest therapists too. When the public can't tell the difference, everyone gets lumped together.
Because the rules are a confusing patchwork
California shows how tangled it gets. State law created the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) for statewide certification, but it also limited local governments' ability to regulate, and several cities reported illicit establishments multiplying as a result. The legislature then passed AB 1147, which restored local authority over massage establishments. Today, responsibility is split between CAMTC and local governments. So the rules can differ between Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim and San Diego. No wonder both clients and therapists feel unsure.
Because advertising became risky for honest providers
After FOSTA-SESTA in 2018, websites became more exposed to prosecution for hosting ads for sexual services, and platforms tightened up quickly. A licensed therapist in one lawsuit said he could no longer advertise on Craigslist after April 2018, and that no equivalent site matched its reach. Legitimate independent therapists have had to fight for visibility, while the shady operators simply moved. Some lawmakers are now pushing back, too. A 2026 Maryland bill proposes that massage ads include the therapist's name and license number.
Why it hits men even harder
This part is NOCTI's editorial view, not a statistic: • Stigma stacks up. A man booking a massage with a male therapist may worry about assumptions on top of the usual awkwardness. • Search results are messy. Searching "massage near me" mixes real therapists with misleading listings. • Few safe places to ask. Many men simply don't know what's normal, what's off-limits, or what's a red flag.
How to protect yourself
• Check for CAMTC certification or the local permit that applies. • Look for clear services, clear pricing, and professional language. • Walk away if you see hints of "extras," vague add-ons, or pressure. • Trust your instincts. You can end a session at any time.
