New attention around a large study suggests that higher tyrosine levels in the body may be associated with a shorter lifespan in men. The headline sounds alarming—but the details matter. The study did not prove that taking an L-tyrosine supplement will shorten your life, and it is not a reason to suddenly remove protein from your diet. Here is what men actually need to know. What is tyrosine? Tyrosine is an amino acid the body uses to make proteins and several important chemical messengers, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. What did researchers discover?
Researchers from the University of Hong Kong and the University of Georgia examined UK Biobank data and genetic evidence to study the relationship between circulating tyrosine, phenylalanine, mortality, and lifespan. After accounting for phenylalanine, higher tyrosine remained associated with an estimated 0.91-year reduction in male lifespan. The same statistically significant relationship was not found in women. The study combined observational analysis with Mendelian randomization, a genetic research method that can provide stronger clues about possible cause-and-effect relationships. Does this mean L-tyrosine supplements shorten men’s lives? No—that has not been proven. This is the most important part of the story. Researchers studied tyrosine levels circulating in the body. They did not randomly assign men to take L-tyrosine supplements for decades and compare their lifespans with a control group. Higher tyrosine levels could be influenced by diet, metabolism, genetics, medical conditions, or other factors. A blood-level association cannot automatically be translated into “one supplement causes an early death.” Even the researchers said that more investigation is needed before their findings can become specific dietary or medical recommendations. Why might men be affected differently? Scientists do not yet have a confirmed explanation. One possibility involves insulin resistance—the reduced ability of cells to respond properly to insulin. Tyrosine also participates in pathways connected to stress hormones and neurotransmitters, which may function differently in men and women. This study does not establish that normal dietary protein is dangerous. It also does not prove that reducing protein or tyrosine will extend someone’s life. Aggressively restricting protein without medical guidance could create other health problems, including muscle loss and poor recovery.
