Turkey Trots 2026: Five Los Angeles and Orange County Races, Compared
Downtown LA, Pasadena, Torrance, Irvine and Dana Point all have Thanksgiving morning events. Compare distance, timing, dog and stroller rules, packet pickup and the kind of morning each race actually offers.

Thanksgiving morning has two kinds of people. Both are looking for parking.
Southern California has no shortage of Thanksgiving turkey trots on Thursday, November 26, 2026. The useful question is not which event has the biggest inflatable bird. It is which morning fits your distance, pace, location, accessibility needs and tolerance for a 6 a.m. packet pickup. This guide compares five current official listings across Downtown Los Angeles, Pasadena, Torrance, Irvine and Dana Point. Some are timed races; others welcome a relaxed walk. Dog and stroller rules vary. So do start times, packet pickup and the purpose behind the event. Registration can fill or change, so use the organizer links below before paying or leaving home. NOCTI is not a race organizer.
Downtown LA is the full festival morning
Turkey Trot Los Angeles lists a 5K, 10K, combined 5K-and-10K option, one-mile Dog Jog and children’s Widdle Wobble at Grand Park. Race-day packet pickup opens at 6 a.m.; the Dog Jog starts at 7:30, 5K waves begin at 8 and 8:15, and the 10K starts at 9. The organizer says the course closes at 11. This is the option for someone who wants Downtown landmarks and a post-race festival, but it also requires the most careful arrival plan. The official page warns drivers not to approach parking from the south because of street closures. Dogs are assigned to the Dog Jog and are not allowed on the 5K or 10K courses. The event says it supports The Midnight Mission.
| Area | Formats and first start | Rule or planning detail |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Los Angeles | Dog Jog 7:30 a.m.; 5K waves 8 and 8:15; 10K 9; kids 10:15 | Dogs belong in the Dog Jog, not the 5K or 10K; plan around street closures |
| Pasadena / Rose Bowl | One 5K recreational loop; verify final race-day schedule | Run, walk or stroll; leashed dogs welcome; children 9 and under free |
| Torrance | Three-mile fun run at 8 a.m. | New start/finish and parking plan; no pets; baby joggers start behind the field |
| Irvine Valley College | One mile 7:30 a.m.; 5K 8; kids 9:15 | Flat course; runners, walkers and strollers welcome |
| Dana Point Harbor | 10K 7 a.m.; 5K waves 8:30, 9:30 and 10; kids 10:30 | No dogs; strollers start toward the back; free shuttle locations listed |

Rose Bowl keeps the decision simple
The ninth annual Rose Bowl Turkey Trot is a 5K recreational loop around the stadium. The official announcement welcomes participants who want to run, walk or stroll, says children nine and under are free, and allows dogs on leash. Proceeds support the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation and Pasadena Unified School District athletics through the Pasadena Educational Foundation. Choose this one when the group wants one shared distance rather than negotiating between a 10K, multiple waves and a children’s race. “All ages and abilities” still does not answer every access question: contact the organizer before registration if wheelchair access, surface conditions, sensory needs or another accommodation could determine whether the loop works for you.
Torrance is the affordable community fun-run lane
The City of Torrance lists its Harry Sutter Memorial Turkey Trot as a three-mile fun run beginning at 8 a.m. Check-in and registration run from 6:30 to 7:30, with a warm-up before the start and a prize drawing afterward. The city also identifies a new start and finish area in the Lowe’s parking lot and directs participants to park at Sam’s Club or Torrance Crossroads—not at Lowe’s. Pets, bicycles, scooters, skates, skateboards and roller blades are not permitted on the course. Baby joggers may participate but must start behind runners and walkers. Advance packet pickup is Wednesday at the Ken Miller Recreation Center; race-day pickup is at the start area. This is the event to read twice if muscle memory keeps sending you to last year’s location.
Irvine offers a flat, flexible family format
The OC/Irvine Turkey Trot at Irvine Valley College lists a one-mile start at 7:30 a.m., the 5K at 8 and a children’s Gobble Wobble at 9:15. The organizer describes the course as flat and open to runners, walkers and strollers. A combination entry is available for people who want both the mile and 5K. A second Orange County option, the Orange County Rescue Mission Turkey Trot 5K, is scheduled for 8 a.m. and is described by the nonprofit as family-, dog- and competitive-runner-friendly. Its proceeds support the mission’s programs. These are separate events with separate registration pages; do not assume a confirmation, location or rule from one applies to the other.
Dana Point is the choose-your-pace harbor morning
The 49th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot lists a 7 a.m. 10K, 5K starts at 8:30 and 9:30, a 10 a.m. “Walk the Trot” wave and a 10:30 children’s mile. The official FAQ says all three 5K waves use the same course: the difference is start time and expected pace. Dogs are not allowed on course. Strollers are allowed but must line up toward the back. Packet pickup is available Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m. and Thursday from 6 to 11 a.m. at Dana Marina Plaza. The organizer lists free race-day shuttles from Dana Hills High School and the Costco in San Juan Capistrano. The current course page says the 2026 map is still coming and displays prior-year information below it, so verify the final map instead of treating an old image as current.
Do not let a holiday 5K become your first workout since spring
A turkey trot can be a race, a walk or a social appointment with sneakers. Choose the version that matches what you have actually been doing, not what the registration photo awakens in you. A 10K plus 5K combination is 15 kilometers whether or not somebody puts a pie emoji beside it. Build toward the distance, use shoes you have already worn and check the forecast, surface, hydration stations and time limit. If you have a health condition, recent injury or symptoms that make exercise uncertain, ask an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on a general event description. Stop and seek urgent help for chest pressure, severe shortness of breath, fainting, sudden weakness or another alarming symptom. Call 911 for an emergency. A trainer, massage therapist or recovery professional does not replace medical assessment.
The night-before checklist is not glamorous. That is why it works.
Confirm the event, start wave and exact address from the organizer. Save the packet-pickup window, parking or shuttle plan and registration confirmation. Lay out tested shoes, weather-appropriate layers, identification if required and any ordinary personal supplies you need. Agree on a meeting point if your group separates, because “beside the finish line” becomes surprisingly philosophical in a crowd. On race morning, arrive early enough to follow event staff and posted closures without rushing across traffic. Start in the pace area that matches how you intend to move. Keep children, dogs and strollers only in events or waves that explicitly allow them. Respect volunteers and other participants; a holiday costume does not repeal course etiquette.
Recovery begins with not turning breakfast into a medical theory
Afterward, cool down gradually, change out of damp clothes, eat and drink according to your normal needs, and give the body an easier day if that is what it is asking for. General soreness can happen after unfamiliar activity. Severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, weakness, dark urine, breathing trouble or symptoms that feel wrong deserve medical attention—not a harder foam-rolling session. If massage, assisted stretching or another recovery service is already part of your routine, tell the professional what distance you completed, what feels different and whether there was an injury. Ask about scope and timing before booking. A clear professional should be comfortable saying when a service is not appropriate and when medical evaluation comes first.
The NOCTI verdict: pick the logistics before the leggings
Downtown LA offers the biggest menu. Rose Bowl offers one iconic loop. Torrance keeps the community fun-run feel. Irvine provides flexible family distances. Dana Point gives walkers and faster runners distinct waves by the harbor. None is “best” without the person, pace and morning attached. Choose the event whose rules you can explain before the alarm goes off. Register through the official organizer. Then enjoy the rare Southern California tradition where being finished before breakfast is the whole point.
