🩺 HEALTH | Your blood may drop prostate cancer hints 15 years early
Oxford Population Health researchers measured more than 6,000 blood proteins in 982 men who later developed prostate cancer and 1,573 comparison men, followed for about 16 years. Twelve proteins were linked to diagnoses more than 15 years later, and seven to aggressive disease, in a study in European Urology. The links were mostly modest, and this isn't a screening test yet. For now, ask your doctor when PSA screening makes sense for you, especially if prostate cancer runs in your family. University of Copenhagen researchers report in Nature Aging that muscle mitochondria lose a fat called cardiolipin with age, and in mice that loss pushed muscles toward slower, weaker fibers. "The fiber switch is not the muscle failing, but the muscle trading power for protection," one researcher said. Restoring cardiolipin reversed muscle wasting in mice, but that hasn't been shown in people. Strength training is still your best move, and unexplained weakness is worth a doctor visit. University of Eastern Finland researchers studied 2,546 men aged 42 to 60: the biggest animal-protein eaters had total testosterone about 1.2 nmol/L lower than the lowest, while the top plant-protein eaters ran about 1.1 nmol/L higher. It's a snapshot study, so it can't prove cause, and the lead author called the differences "relatively small." ASTRO's updated guideline in Practical Radiation Oncology recommends moderately shortened radiation (20 or 28 sessions over about 4 to 6 weeks) for men with localized prostate cancer choosing external beam radiation, and five-session SBRT for many low- and intermediate-risk patients. "SBRT has moved from a promising alternative to a standard treatment option for many patients with localized prostate cancer," said task force chair Dr. Scott Morgan. Osaka Metropolitan University researchers found that male mice with lowered testosterone fed fructose built up much more liver fat than mice with either factor alone, possibly through gut bacteria changes.
