NOCTI Guide
LA Is Stressed Enough Already.” Meet LevinLife, the Massage Provider Who Wants You to Actually Relax
LA works hard, trains hard and apparently forgets how to relax. LevinLife talks with NOCTI about massage, men’s wellness, LGBTQ+ friendly care and why slowing down shouldn’t feel like a luxury.
NOCTI Professional Interview • Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles has almost everything. Traffic that can turn a 20-minute drive into a spiritual journey. People answering emails at midnight. Gym memberships that somehow become a second job. And yes — a very large, very visible LGBTQ+ community, especially around neighborhoods like West Hollywood. So when NOCTI asked LevinLife what he notices most about clients in Los Angeles, he didn’t need much time to think. “Everybody is tired.” Then he laughed. “Some people are tired from work. Some from the gym. Some from traffic. Some from dating in LA.” Fair enough.

NOCTI: So what usually brings someone to you?
LevinLife: “Usually they say something like, ‘My shoulders are killing me,’ or ‘My back is so tight.’” “And then five minutes later I find out they’ve been working at a computer all day, going to the gym at night and sleeping six hours.” He laughs. “I’m like…okay, we found the mystery.” For LevinLife, massage isn’t about performing the same routine for every person who walks through the door. He wants to know what their week actually looks like. Are they sitting all day? Training hard? Traveling? Standing for work? Or are they simply mentally exhausted and looking for an hour where nobody expects anything from them? “People are different. Their massage should be different too.”

Men Are Finally Getting Better at This Whole Self-Care Thing
NOCTI: Do you see more men taking massage and wellness seriously now? LevinLife: “Definitely.” “I think guys used to make self-care way more complicated than it needed to be.” He jokes that some men will tolerate a tight shoulder for six months before finally admitting something might need attention. “We’ll spend money fixing the car immediately. But our own back? ‘Maybe it’ll go away.’” In Los Angeles, he sees clients from many different backgrounds, including plenty of LGBTQ+ men. That diversity matters. “For me, everybody should be able to walk in and feel normal. You shouldn’t have to wonder if somebody is judging you.” ⸻ Being LGBTQ+ Friendly Shouldn’t Be a Marketing Trick NOCTI: Los Angeles has a huge gay community. Does that change the way you work? LevinLife: “I think it changes the importance of making people feel comfortable.” But he doesn’t believe being LGBTQ+ friendly requires turning the appointment into something different. “It just means respect.” No awkward assumptions. No judgment. No making somebody feel like they need to explain themselves. “You’re here because you booked a massage. That’s really it.” That answer feels almost too simple. Maybe that’s the point. ⸻ The Most Important Question Might Be: “What Do You Actually Need Today?” NOCTI: What do clients sometimes get wrong about massage? LevinLife: “Thinking more pressure automatically means better massage.” He laughs. “Somebody will say, ‘Go as hard as possible.’ And I’m thinking…are we relaxing or fighting?” For him, pressure should match the person and the goal of the session. Some people want deeper, more focused work. Others mainly want to decompress. And sometimes what someone thinks they need at the beginning of the session changes once they actually slow down. “The important thing is communication. You can always tell me.”

NOCTI: Do people actually talk during massage?
LevinLife: “Some people talk the entire time.” “Some people fall asleep.” “Some people give me one-word answers and disappear into another universe.” He laughs. “All are acceptable.” He doesn’t believe there is a “correct” way to experience a massage. If somebody wants conversation, fine. If somebody wants quiet, also fine. “The appointment is not about entertaining me. It’s their time.” ⸻ Los Angeles Has a Problem With Slowing Down Ask LevinLife what makes working in LA different and he immediately mentions pace. People are always moving. Always scheduling. Always checking something. The phone buzzes. Another email arrives. Another meeting gets added. Then somebody finally lies down for a massage and realizes how exhausted they actually are. NOCTI: Do you see that happen often? LevinLife: “All the time.” “Sometimes it takes people ten or fifteen minutes just to stop thinking about the next thing.” And that may be one reason massage fits naturally into modern wellness. It creates something that has become strangely difficult to find: uninterrupted time. No commute. No notifications. No multitasking. Just one appointment where slowing down is literally the assignment. ⸻ You Don’t Have to Be an Athlete to Need Recovery NOCTI: Is massage mostly for gym guys and athletes? LevinLife: “No.” “If you work construction, you use your body. If you stand all day, you use your body. If you sit at a desk all day…believe me, your body knows that too.” He sees wellness as something broader than athletic recovery. Sometimes the client is sore from training. Sometimes they’re stiff from sitting. Sometimes they’re simply stressed. “You don’t need to earn a massage by destroying yourself at the gym first.”
The First Appointment Doesn’t Need to Be Awkward
One of the biggest barriers for first-time clients isn’t price or scheduling. It’s uncertainty. What do I wear? How much pressure should I ask for? Do I have to talk? What happens when I arrive? LevinLife’s answer is refreshingly uncomplicated. “Ask.” NOCTI: Even if the question feels stupid? LevinLife: “Especially then.” “There are no bonus points for pretending you already know everything.” He would rather a new client ask ten questions than spend an hour feeling uncomfortable because they were afraid to ask one. ⸻ What Does a Good Massage Experience Mean to You? LevinLife pauses before answering. Not because the question is difficult. Because his answer is surprisingly simple. “When somebody leaves feeling better than when they arrived.” That doesn’t always mean dramatic transformation. Sometimes they feel looser. Sometimes calmer. Sometimes they simply look less exhausted. “I like seeing that difference.” Then he adds: “And if they forget about LA traffic for an hour, I think we did pretty good.” Honestly? In Los Angeles, that might qualify as a miracle. ⸻ NOCTI: Last question. What would you tell someone who keeps saying, “I’ll book when I have time”? LevinLife laughs. “You live in LA. You’re never going to magically have time.” “You make time.” That may be the most Los Angeles answer possible. Between work, traffic, workouts, relationships, social life and everything else competing for attention, recovery can easily become the thing people keep moving to next week. LevinLife’s philosophy is much simpler: Take care of yourself before your body has to become very loud about getting your attention.
