Free HIV & STI testing + PrEP in Riverside. No insurance, no judgment.

Short answer: yes, you can get tested for free in Riverside. TruEvolution on Brockton Avenue lists free rapid HIV tests with no appointment, and AHF a few blocks away lists free HIV and STI tests. Need PrEP or PEP? Riverside County’s HIV clinic on Indiana Avenue offers both—call (951) 358-6037—and California’s PrEP Assistance Program can help if you’re uninsured.

Riverside gets overlooked—everyone drives through on the 91 on the way to somewhere “more exciting.” Their loss. The county seat has its own HIV clinic, an LGBTQ+ nonprofit that tests for free and a couple of solid backups, all without a trip to L.A. Here’s where to go, what it costs and what to ask, so the only thing you’re sweating is the 91 at 5 PM.

Possible exposure? Ask for PEP. Today, not tomorrow.

PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medicine that must be started within 72 hours of a possible exposure, according to NIH and CDC. Sooner is better. Riverside County says its HIV clinics offer PEP; call (951) 358-6037 on weekdays (the Indiana Avenue clinic lists 7:30 AM–5 PM). Nights and weekends, go to an emergency room or urgent care. PEP is for emergencies; if you’d need it more than once, ask about PrEP.

Free HIV self-tests by mail

Together TakeMeHome mails free HIV self-tests anywhere in the U.S.—up to two every 90 days, either an oral swab or a drop of blood. Riverside University Health System’s HIV prevention page points residents to it too, in discreet packaging. Results take minutes and only you see them. Check eligibility on its site. A self-test checks HIV only, and a positive result needs a follow-up test at a clinic.

No insurance

PrEP without insurance: what still works

  • California PrEP-APThe state’s PrEP Assistance Program is for California residents 18+ with a recent negative HIV test, income up to 500% of the federal poverty level, and no full coverage from Medi-Cal or other insurance. Uninsured people can also get temporary coverage at participating pharmacies (CDPH). Ask any clinic above to help you enroll.
  • Riverside County HIV clinicOral PrEP or the injectable shot, plus PEP, by appointment at (951) 358-6037. The county’s prevention page says most California residents qualify for free PrEP.
  • AHF and Planned ParenthoodCDC listings show PrEP for uninsured patients and a sliding scale at both. Call and ask exactly what you’ll pay.
  • TruEvolutionPrEP navigation—useful if the paperwork is the scary part. Call (951) 888-1346.
  • Manufacturer assistanceCDC lists drug-maker programs for uninsured U.S. residents under an income limit. PrEP-AP asks you to enroll in one if you’re eligible.
  • Heads upThe federal Ready, Set, PrEP program stopped taking new enrollees on July 30, 2024 (KFF Health News). Old articles still recommend it.

Worried about papers or ID?

What we can—and can’t—tell you

We won’t promise anything an official source doesn’t, and here the sources are quiet. None of the Riverside University Health System pages or CDC listings we checked say anything about immigration status or which ID you’ll need. In a 2021 announcement, Riverside County said its community health centers set fees on a sliding scale and that no one is ever turned away from care there, and the Riverside Neighborhood Health Center offers income-based discounts if you’re uninsured. Federal law has long kept public-health programs for treating communicable-disease symptoms open regardless of immigration status (National Immigration Law Center), but federal rules have shifted in 2025–2026.

Practical move: call first and ask what you’ll need before you give your name. CDC’s directory lists Spanish at TruEvolution, and the county health center says its teams are multilingual. Home self-tests arrive by mail.

Questions men actually ask

FAQ

Where can I get a free HIV test in Riverside?

TruEvolution on Brockton Avenue lists free rapid HIV tests with no appointment required. AHF’s Riverside center, also on Brockton Avenue, lists free HIV and STI tests by appointment. Riverside University Health System’s clinic at the Riverside Neighborhood Health Center on Indiana Avenue is listed on CDC GetTested with free HIV and STI tests by appointment at (951) 358-6037. Hours change, so check the source or call first.

Can I get PrEP in Riverside without insurance?

Yes, there are options. CDC GetTested lists PrEP for uninsured patients at the county’s Riverside Neighborhood Health Center, AHF Riverside and Planned Parenthood’s Riverside Flaster center, and the county says its HIV clinics offer both oral and injectable PrEP. California’s PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP) helps California residents 18 and older with income up to 500% of the federal poverty level who aren’t fully covered by Medi-Cal or other insurance. The federal Ready, Set, PrEP program stopped taking new enrollees on July 30, 2024.

What if I think I was exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours?

Ask for PEP right away. NIH and CDC say PEP must be started within 72 hours of a possible exposure and is taken daily for 28 days. Riverside County’s HIV clinics list PEP; call (951) 358-6037 on weekdays. On weekends or at night, go to an emergency room or urgent care. Sooner is better.

Does the county clinic still do free HIV testing?

CDC GetTested lists free HIV and STI tests at the county’s Riverside Neighborhood Health Center clinic, by appointment. One older line on the county’s HIV care page still mentions a COVID-era pause in its free testing schedule, so call (951) 358-6037 and ask what’s free today.

Do I need papers or ID to get tested in Riverside?

None of the clinic pages or listings we checked say anything about immigration status or ID requirements. NOCTI can’t promise how any clinic handles ID, so call first and ask what you’ll need. A free HIV self-test by mail is another option.
